Garnet is the birthstone for January.  Garnet comes from the Latin word “granatus”, which means seed-like, for the resemblance to the seeds of the pomegranate.

Freshwater pearls are cultured in freshwater mussels, mostly in China.  They are much smaller than saltwater pearls. One mussel can yield more than twenty or more pearls in each harvest.
